Configure and View Site Statistics and Most Popular Content
Site administrators can access site statistics by enabling the statistics module. Included in the statistics are a running list of referring sites (sometimes called "referers" a very common misspelling of "referrers"), originating IP address, time of access, as well as cumulative stats such as most popular daily content, most popular content overall on both a single page as well as a sidebar block.
To Enable Site Statistics
- Login
- Click administer » modules and check the box next to statistics, then click the "Save configuration" button.
- Set the permissions for administering and viewing statistics: Click administer » access control
- Scroll down to the statistics module listing and choose roles that have the for the access statistics permission. This allows people to view the counts of how many times content has been accessed as well as the administration logs (the second one also requires the "access administration pages" permission under the system module)
To Configure the Statistics
- Click administer » settings » statistics.
- Choose whether you would like to enable the access log. This is required if you wish to find out which sites readers are visiting from, or referring URLs.
- Choose whether you want to enable counters for individual content items.
- Every time content is accessed, an extra database call is made. This may slow the site down slightly, but usually not enough to notice.
Configure the Popular Statistics Block
- click administer » blocks
- click the "configure" link in the row for "Popular statistics"
- choose a number for Number of day's top views to display.
- "Disabled" means most popular items for the day will not be displayed in the popular statistics block.
- Choose a number for Number of all time views to display. This is amount of items that will display as most popular since counting is enabled.
- "Disabled" means the most popular items of all time will not be displayed in the popular statistics block.
- Choose a number for Number of most recent views to display.
- "Disabled" means the most-popular items of all time will not be displayed in the popular statistics block.
To enable the block, and for other block setings, see our instructions on enabling and placing sidebar blocks.

To Enable Site Statistics
Item 3 in 'To Enable Site Statistics' above seems amiss. There are no 'permissions' uner the administer » users » configure tab
Old version, but updated now
Thanks for pointing that out, Phil. That was for the 4.5 version of the software, and we're up to the 4.6 version, which means that a few things got shifted around. I made an update to the documentation.
