Configure the Main Admin Settings
The Settings page, accessible at Administer » Site configuration, is typically the first page you will configure on a new site, and is where you set high-level options for the entire site. Below is an explanation of some of the sections and what they do. Many modules will add settings sections to this page, so this is an incomplete list, but it will get you started.
Main Settings
The first settings most site administrators will want to set can be found by clicking Administer » Site configuration » Site information. The following are a list of all the settings to be found here.- Name: the name of your site, displayed at the top of every page and also optionally as part of your theme in the header
- E-mail address: this email address will be used as the "From" address for all emails sent out by your site, including for new user registration, forgotten password requests, and subscription notifications. It is recommended that you use a general address like info@mysite.com or another general email address.
- Slogan: a short descriptive phrase about your site, which is optionally displayed as part of your theme. The slogan will also appear in the description for the site's RSS feeds.
- Mission: a brief introduction to what the purpose or goals of your site are, which is optionally displayed in a special style above the first post on your front page; also required for the directory feature
- Footer message: message that is optionally displayed at the bottom of pages as part of the theme
- Anonymous user: the name used by default to label all posts by users that do not register, set by default to "Anonymous"; in the comment settings, you can additionally specify whether non-registered members may leave their name, URL, and email address.
- Default front page: the relative URL that indicates which page of items (or individual page) is shown on the front page. The default on Bryght sites is node, meaning that all content promoted to the front page will be shown. The default is generally recommended, but this can be changed to, for example, aggregator if the administrator wants the built-in aggregator to show exclusively on the front page or event if all the administrator wants on the front page are event listings.
Clean URLs
If for some reason your site's URLs look like http://www.example.com/?q=node/42 and you want to remove the "?q=" part, click Administer » Site configuration » Clean URLs, and choose "Enabled". This is the default setting and we do not recommend changing it.
Error Pages
Every Bryght site lets you customize the error pages that it generates automatically. First you would need to create a new piece of content (the "Page" content type is perfect for this) without comments enabled, set to not promoted to the front page, with something like information on how to contact you or why you might be receiving the error. The two types of error pages are: 1) "Access denied" pages, where a user does not have the right permissions to view something, and 2) "Not found" where the page in question does not exist.
These settings can be found under Administer » Site configuration » Error reporting.
- Default 403 (access denied) page: a relative URL to a message explaining why a user was denied access to a page. The default on Bryght sites is blank, and a generic error is displayed when a user tries to access a page they do not have the required permissions to view.
- Default 404 (not found) page: same as the 403 page, except this is for when a user tries to access a page that simply does not exist. The default on Bryght sites is blank, so a generic error is displayed.
- Error reporting: Where to post error messages: either on the screen or in the administration logs, which you can access by clicking Administer » Logs.
- Discard log entries older than: how long the system keeps log messages in the system. One week is generally plenty, so it is the default on Bryght sites.
Date and Time
Time zone and date format settings can be found under Administer » Site configuration » Date and time.
- Default time zone: the time zone of the dates and times on the site assigned to content as well as log messages when they are created.
- Configurable time zones: if enabled, it means that each user, if they go to their profile settings, can change the time zone to accurately reflect where they live, and the dates on the site will be updated accordingly.
- Short date format: the standard way you or your country expresses short dates. An example of where this format will show up is when users edit their birthday in their profile page.
- Medium date format: a slightly longer date format, used in some themes as format for the way the creation date of site content appears publicly.
- Long date format: the longest date format, also used in some themes as the publication date.
- First day of week: Either Sunday or Monday, used when displaying calendars. If Sunday is chosen, then Sunday appears as the left-most column and Saturday appears as the right-most column. If set to Monday, then Saturday and Sunday appear to the right of the weekdays.
