Syndicating an RSS Feed

Once you've found an RSS feed, you can add it to the aggregator by following these steps:

  1. Copy the link to the clipboard.
  2. On your Drupal site, click on administer » aggregator » add feed tab.
  3. Type a title for the feed. This can be whatever you like, but is usually the name of the site you are adding.
  4. Paste in the URL of the feed.
  5. Set the frequency of updates. The standard practice is to update every hour, because that limits the amount of hits a site gets on the feed, and depending on their setup, they would have to incur extra bandwidth charges if too many people update too often. Of course, if you know that the site only updates every couple of days, you can set this number much higher.
  6. Choose whether you wish to enable the item block.
    • this allows you to show the last x (a configurable number) items in that feed in a block (see How to Configure Blocks to place a block on only certain pages)
  7. If you have created categories (see below) select which categories you wish items to automatically appear. Individual items can be tagged with categories later. (Also, see below.)
  8. Click submit.

RSS Feeds and the Law

Please note - most posts about how to aggregate RSS feeds forget to mention that in most cases you can NOT just start using someone else's feed on your web site without permission of the feed owner. Always check the owner's website for information on their RSS Feeds. Most commercial sources (CNN, etc) specifically state on their websites that their RSS feeds are for personal, individual use only - any use on websites, etc has to be authorized by them in writing.

Don't get sued because you didn't check - using feeds without permission is copyright infringement. Just because you CAN do it doesn't mean it's LEGAL.
