What is an install profile?

A Drupal install profile is a bundle of modules plus configuration settings that are applied to new installations.

Drupal 5 ships with a "default" install profile that is similar to previous versions, enabling certain core modules and creating two types of content – page and story – with the new flexible content types.

When you create a new site, you can choose which install profile you would like applied to your site. The modules, themes, and configuration settings will be applied automatically to your new site. A site created with an install profile other than the default will either set some basic settings for commonly used extra modules, or be targeted for creating a site of a certain type – e.g. a community site.
