Configure Image and Photo Albums

Site administrators can create options for automatically resizing images when a user uploads them. Also, administrators can create a vocabulary so that users can create and add images to albums.

Configuring the Image Thumbnail Size Settings

  1. Click Administer » Site settings » Image.
  2. Make sure the images directory is set. This is where on the file system images will upload to. "images" is usually fine as the default.
  3. To add new "sizes" that the images will automatically be resized to, type in a brief description of the size. Then add the width and height in pixels.
    • You can add multiple thumbnail sizes in the rows below the sizes already set.
  4. Choose whether you want users to see the images' original sizes.
  5. Click the "Save configuration" button.

Creating Image/Photo Albums (a.k.a. Galleries)

  1. Click Administer » Content management » Image galleries.
    • If this is the first time you clicked this, the system will create an "Image Galleries" vocabulary.
    • Only users with the "administer images" permission can create albums.
  2. Click the add gallery tab.
  3. Type in the name of the album you wish to create.
  4. (Optional) Type in a longer description of the album.
  5. Select a "parent" for the album. If there are no existing albums, "<root>" will be your only choice. If you have an existing album, you can have what are essentially album subcategories.
    • for example, if you have a "Pets" album, underneath you could have a "Dogs" and "Cats" album. That way, when you put a photo of your beloved Fido in the "Dogs" album, it will also appear in the "Animals" album (but not the "Cats" album).
  6. Select a weight for the album in the list. Higher numbers mean the album will "sink" to the bottom of the list, lower numbers mean the album will "rise" in the list.
  7. Click "Submit".

Add a "Latest Image" or "Random Image" Block to the Sidebar

  1. make sure the image module is enabled by checking the box next to 'image' in Administer » Site building Modules.
  2. Create albums (see above) and add images to the galleries.
  3. Click Administer » Site building » Blocks and check the box in the Enable column next to "Latest image" or "Random image"
    • "Latest image" will show a thumbnail of the most-recently added image
    • "Random image" will show a randomly-selected image from all albums.
  4. Assign a weight to the block. Larger numbers mean the block will sink to the bottom, smaller numbers mean it will rise to the top.
  5. Choose which side you with the block to appear on.
  6. (optional) Assign a block path for the block. We have some instructions on how to do that with examples.
  7. Click "Save blocks".
