Configure User Pictures (Avatars)

Users can upload a small photo to their user profile similar to many forums and community sites. These are sometimes called "avatars" and often reflect the personality of the user. They can also be head shots, so that readers can get a sense of what the writer looks like.

  1. Click Administer » User management » User settings.
  2. Scroll down to the box labeled "Pictures".
  3. Select "Enabled" under "Picture support".
  4. Choose a path for where the pictures will be uploaded to.
  5. (optional) For the "Default picture:" setting, paste in a URL to an image existing either on your site or elsewhere on the Internet.
    • If you've created images using the image module (see our instructions on how to do that), you can copy the URL of the image directly to this setting. You can even use the /image/42 notation, i.e. if your image exists at http://www.example.com/image/42
  6. Choose a maximum width and height in the format WWxHH where WW is a width in pixels and HH is a height in pixels.
  7. Choose a maximum user picture file size. Since the image will generally be small, 30 KB will be plenty.
  8. Type in guidelines for user pictures. This can be paragraph form, and can generally include what you will tolerate in terms of what is contained in the image.
  9. Click "Save configuration".
  10. Not done yet: click Administer (top menu) » Site building » Themes » Configure tab.
  11. Scroll down to the "Toggle display" box and choose whether you want user photos to appear in posts or in comments or both.
  12. Click "Save configuration".
