Setting Up Weblinks for the First Time
To set up a directory of links, you need to setup a vocabulary and some terms (categories) for the directory. This how-to also goes into some of the administration settings of the Weblinks module.
Setting Up Directory Folders/Categories
Setting up categories is the same as for any content type. This is the short version of our how-to on setting up vocabularies and terms (categories).
- click administer » categories
- click the add vocabulary tab and create a vocabulary with the type "weblink". See the how-to on vocabularies for information on each setting.
- create terms for your just-created vocabulary. You can do this by clicking the "add term" link next to the vocabulary.
Weblink Settings
Note: you need to setup the vocabulary the module will use in its settings page. This is an extra step which will prevent you from seeing all vocabularies in the directory listing.
- If you haven't already, click administer » modules and make sure the Weblinks module is enabled.
- Click administer » settings » weblink
- Select the vocabulary you just created above. If there is only one vocabulary, then that will automatically be selected. Important: You will still need to save for the setting to take effect.
- Select what you want to show as the link text, either the title of the weblink you create, the URL that people will be directed towards, or the word "visit" linked to the site you're sending people to.
- Select a number of items in the block. The block can be found under administer » blocks.
- In the "Link targets" set of options, you can select where the link will show up.
- For the first setting, we recommend keeping the link in the same window, so users can choose where to load the site. Also: links in new windows effectively breaks the back button, meaning users will not be able to come 'back' to your site without closing the latest window. That said, you still have the option to force links from the weblink module into a new window through this setting.
- For the second setting, select whether the user can choose the target of all links created by the module.
- Select whether you wish to enable link monitoring. This means you can see which links users clicked on.
- Select whether you want to allow users to submit blogmarks. They will be able to do this through a bookmarlet—that is, a small script which sits on their browser toolbar which sends the link in for evaluation by the administrator.
