Customizing Themes in Drupal 5

Categories:

In my old Drupal 4.7x site, I can customized certain themes by uploading new images, html pages, php pages etc. I didn't see a way to do this on my Drupal 5 site. OK, I have only been working with it for a few hours, but initially, I didn't see a way to do this.

Can themes be customized like I discribed?

If not, how can I customize themes and perhaps add new themes? Do I have to become a VPS customer?

Thanks.

CSS in a box

You cannot make any customizations to the theme on Drupal 5 sites other than the logo and customizing the CSS using the "Custom CSS" (which we internally call "CSS in a box" because, well, that describes what it is). You can find that under Administer » Site building » Themes, then the "configure" link to the theme that you're currently using. We are currently looking some other advanced themes that have custom image headers etc.

To have fully customized themes, yes, you would need to us a VPS, which gives you full access to the file system.

Please confirm then that

Please confirm that with a Basic Bryght site, it isn't possible to customize the masthead area to appear something like the following site,

If this isn't possible, I do begin to wonder who this package might appeal to. My client wants more style, something more than a simple logo image.

Well, in the Bright Light (the hosted service) package, which you get through bryght.com/signup or through your reseller settings, then no, you can't customize it exactly like that, but you can change the logo of the site and then modify the CSS using the "Custom CSS" box in the theme's settings so that the title has a negative margin, making it appear over the logo. The way Shelfanger Village did it, it looks like, is by replacing the image that comes with the theme, which you could do on the VPS package.

I think you might already be familiar with the pricing, but but if not (and for other s reading in) that can be found at support.bryght.com/vps/pricing. You can create as many sites on the VPS as you want, and would get full access to the file system, so you can fully customize every aspect of the theme.

If I want to become an

If I want to become an expert Drupal/Bryght middleman, providing Bryrght packages to client organizations, I should bite the bullet and take a VPS account. My current client on Bryght Light will pay $19.95/mo so I could offer them a reduced rate on my VPS. But my intention was to set them up to be independent of me, so they can fire me if they want, lock me out of their account, and hire a different Drupal manager. (I don't like to make my clients dependent on me, as I appreciate Bryght not making me dependent upon them -- by enabling me to obtain my Bryght database if I choose to scram.)

Are individual sites hosted within VPS portable?

Are the various light and wiki 'profile' installations available within VPS?

Yes

They are just as portable as sites on the hosted service are. That is, you would be able to provide a backup of their database and files and they'd be free to move to a different service.

Are the various light and wiki 'profile' installations available within VPS?

Yes. The profile you see on the Bryght Light is the same as the initial one on the VPS. (The profile is called "Bryght Basic", and is available on the two services "Bryght Light", which is the hosted service, and "Bryght Hosting", which is the VPS service.) The Drupal Wiki profile is available on the VPS, but we don't have it 'enabled' yet—still working out some of the kinks in it—but there's nothing stopping advanced users from enabling it and trying it out.
