Server response times

Categories:

I was noticing a bit of slowness when accessing the Bryght site. My own trial-account site has not yet active yet, so I was just curious about how the server response times are. For example here are the results I am getting

Bryght.com - Avg=683ms Min=216ms Max=1157ms
MediaTemple.net - Avg=271ms Min=134ms Max=346ms
1&1.com - Avg=183ms Min=68ms Max=275ms
Phpwebhosting.com - Avg=247ms Min=173ms Max=301ms
Google.com - Avg=46ms Min=34ms Max=69ms

I have sites located at the three other hosting vendors, and I was looking to implement some Drupal sites at Bryght. But these numbers are quite higher than the other vendors. Are my numbers wrong - or do you have a baseline performance that you guarantee?

Fully managed vs. VPS

Bryght.com runs on our fully managed cluster. You *may* have hit us at a bad time: we're converting all our databases to InnoDB. This support.bryght.com site is on a VPS (a bit more info on specs and pricing for VPS). If you want something that is more like traditional hosting, I think you'll find our production Drupal hosting with the Virtual Private Servers is a good option and has very good performance.

Hmmm....looking at those numbers again, are you doing HTTP response or just traceroute / ping tests? Just now, a traceroute to www.bryght.com shows 33.404/36.437/52.091 and support.bryght.com is at 33.338/36.247/47.870 (from a Cable connection here in Vancouver). Almost as good as Google!

Where are you pinging from?

The site we are developing will have an international audience, though the
initial core users will be using the site as an intranet, and also to upload
the data - which is where the potential slow response time could become
frustrating.

Custom VPS

I'm not sure why you're seeing the numbers you are out of mon.itor.us: looking at Alexa and other tools, we're getting very good response times.

The type of custom site you want to build will need a VPS (i.e. you will have your own server). Feel free to call us if you want to discuss it in person.

Can you post any links to

Can you post any links to these? Also, if you can point a sample site hosted on a VPS that I can test and monitor for performance.
