Is there a way to manage uploaded files and images using a somewhat-traditional interface? I realize that my users can attach images to bits of content, but I'd like them to be able to upload/download documents and images to a file repository. Is there already a module or other way to do this that I'm missing?

If there were some way to better manage files- even just through standard FTP (well, SFTP) access to a files directory- we'd be in a much better position.

Not on the hosted service

On the VPS servers, you could install a module that does this, like Web File Manager or others from the file management category for modules on Drupal.org. But not on the hosted service, on which we do not install any modules other than what's currently available.
