How do I upgrade a VPS-based site on 4.7 to Drupal 5?

Lisa Williams - April 4, 2008 - 13:50

I've bounced around the forum and docs a bit, but I'm still not sure what the answer to this one is, so I thought I'd ask.

My site, H2otown.info, is on 4.7. It really needs a refresher, and it would be great to be able to use 5's better themes, and I'm attracted by some of the other great stuff in 5, too.

So how do I go about upgrading to 5 on my VPS-based site?

Thanks, guys!

We have some instructions on setting up multiple versions of Drupal which will get you started with the upgrade. Some other steps:

  1. make a database backup (of your current site) (you'll need this for importing to the new install of Drupal, and it's good to have anyway)
  2. create a new database for your new site
  3. if you don't want to do the web server stuff, there's a forum post where I explained an option of setting it up with the current web server setup
  4. install all the modules you need
  5. run update.php on the new site. You may need to edit the Drupal 5 update.php file to allow yourself to do this. Since it would be running from a separate database, it wouldn't affect your current site, but there's no harm in making a backup of your current site's database anyway.

Let me know if you have any questions. Version upgrades from one major release to another can be a little scary, but as long as you have backups along the way and keep file structures in place, you can revert back to its previous state.
